The OGMP is a Climate and Clean Air Coalition initiative led by the UN Environment Programme, in partnership with the European Commission, the UK Government, the Environmental Defense Fund, and leading oil and gas companies.
Already 62 companies with assets on five continents representing 30 percent of the world’s oil and gas production have joined the partnership.
The OGMP 2.0 is the new gold standard reporting framework that will improve the reporting accuracy and transparency of anthropogenic methane emissions in the oil and gas sector.
Methane is a very powerful greenhouse gas: methane emissions are the second largest cause of global warming. The Oil and Gas industry is a primary contributor to anthropogenic methane emissions.
Last year alone, the global oil and gas industry wasted $19 billion of natural gas due to methane leaks. Because of methane emissions, the oil and gas industry’s climate impact is greater than that of every gas-powered passenger vehicle on the planet.
Along with methane, oil and gas facilities release other toxic pollutants that can cause cancer, respiratory illness and other health problems. Reducing methane reduces these health risks.
We cannot meet the Paris Agreement goals and avoid exceeding 1.5 °C of warming without reducing the methane emissions from the global oil and gas industry. Luckily, the industry is taking action.
Companies that join OGMP commit to the OGMP2.0 framework - the new gold standard reporting framework that will improve the reporting accuracy and transparency of anthropogenic methane
